Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts roof snow, the meltwater runs down to the cold overhang and refreezes into a ridge, and subsequent meltwater pools behind that ridge and works under the shingles. Clearing snow stops them growing. Attic air sealing and insulation is the permanent fix.
The mechanism, step by step
An ice dam is not caused by cold weather. It is caused by a roof that is warm in the middle and cold at the edge, which is a building problem that only shows itself when there is snow on the roof.
Heat from the living space leaks into the attic through ceiling penetrations, gaps around light fixtures, attic hatches, plumbing stacks, chimney chases and inadequate insulation. That heat warms the underside of the roof deck above the heated part of the house. Snow sitting on that warm section melts.
The meltwater runs down the roof until it reaches the overhang, which extends past the exterior wall and has no heated space beneath it. That section is at outdoor temperature. The water refreezes there, and over repeated cycles it builds into a ridge of solid ice at the eave.
Now the ridge acts as a dam. The next round of meltwater backs up behind it and sits in a pool on the roof. Shingles shed water running downhill, they do not seal against standing water, so it finds the seams, wicks under, and reaches the sheathing. From there it goes into the wall cavity, the insulation and eventually the ceiling.
Why you often see the damage before you see the dam
Water can travel a surprising distance inside a wall or ceiling before it appears. By the time a stain shows on a bedroom ceiling, the sheathing has usually been wet for a while, the insulation in that bay has lost most of its value, and there may already be mould growth in a cavity nobody can see.
That is why the icicles matter. A row of thick icicles at the gutter line is the visible symptom of the exact conditions that produce a dam. They are not decorative, they are a diagnosis.
What actually fixes ice dams permanently
The permanent fix is to stop the heat getting into the attic in the first place, so the roof deck stays a uniform temperature and the snow on it does not melt from below.
- Air seal the ceiling plane: gaps around light fixtures, fans, plumbing penetrations, the attic hatch and any chases
- Bring attic insulation up to a proper depth and, critically, make sure it is even and covers the perimeter
- Make sure soffit vents are not blocked by insulation, which is extremely common
- Confirm balanced intake and exhaust ventilation so the attic runs at outdoor temperature
- Ensure bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans vent outside the building, not into the attic
- Check that recessed lights in insulated ceilings are rated for insulation contact
What helps this winter, right now
Air sealing an attic in February is not practical for most households, so the interim measures matter. Keeping snow off the lower section of the roof removes the meltwater supply and prevents the dam from growing. A roof rake used from the ground on the bottom three to four feet of roof is the single most effective immediate action.
If a dam has already formed and water is coming in, steam is the correct removal method. It melts a drainage channel through the ice and releases the trapped water without damaging shingles. Chipping with a hatchet, hammer or ice pick will remove the ice and a good deal of your roof along with it.
Things that do not work
Throwing rock salt or ice melt tablets onto a roof is popular and largely counterproductive. It creates isolated melt holes rather than a drainage channel, corrodes flashing, gutters and fasteners, damages the plantings below, and can shorten shingle life.
Heat cables help in specific situations but they treat the symptom, use continuous electricity all winter, and fail if they are installed without also addressing the drainage path. They are a reasonable supplement on a problem roof, not a substitute for fixing the attic.
