Including the ridge the town plow leaves across your apron, which is the part that actually traps your car.
Frosty Snow Management clears Capital Region driveways from the garage door to the street, including the plow berm municipal trucks leave across the apron. Service triggers automatically at two inches, and driveways are typically cleared overnight or early morning.
Most people can live with snow on the driveway for an hour. What they cannot live with is the wall of dense, plow-packed snow the town truck leaves across the bottom of it at 4 AM, thirty minutes after they finished shoveling. That berm is heavier than anything that fell from the sky, it freezes into a solid ridge, and it is the single most common reason people give up and call someone.
We clear driveways end to end, and the apron is part of every visit. If the municipal plow comes back through after our pass and reblocks you, tell us and we return to reopen it.
Driveways in this region come in every configuration, and they are not all the same job. A short flat two-car pad in a Colonie subdivision takes ten minutes. A two hundred foot curved gravel approach in Brunswick with a grade and a turnaround takes considerably longer and needs a different machine. We quote on what is actually there.
Gravel driveways need a different approach and a lot of contractors will not take them because doing it badly means spreading someone’s driveway across their lawn. We run shoes or skids on the blade to keep it off the surface and we time the first clearing of the season for after the ground has frozen where we can, which keeps the stone where it belongs.
If your driveway is gravel, tell us during the quote. It changes the equipment and the approach, and a contractor who does not ask is a contractor who is going to redistribute your stone into the grass by February.
Narrow driveways in older neighborhoods in Albany, Troy, Schenectady and Cohoes present the opposite problem from rural properties. There is no shortage of snow, there is a shortage of anywhere to put it. By the third storm, the banks on either side are chest high and the usable driveway width has shrunk to less than a car.
On these properties we plan stacking carefully from the first event of the season, pushing to the point that preserves the most usable width for longest. Where a property genuinely runs out of room mid-season, we can relocate or haul the pile rather than letting the driveway narrow to unusable.
A standard driveway agreement covers the full driveway surface, the apron and municipal plow berm, and the turnaround or parking pad. Walkways, front steps and entries are commonly added, and we recommend it, because a cleared driveway that ends at an icy set of steps has not really solved the problem.
Ice melt or salt on the driveway surface is available and is worth it on steep drives and on any surface that gets sun during the day and refreezes at night, which is where most residential falls actually happen.
Yes, on every visit. That berm is denser and heavier than fresh snowfall and it is the part that actually traps your car. If the town plow reblocks the apron after we have already been through, let us know and we come back to reopen it.
Yes, but tell us at the quote stage so we set the equipment up for it. We run skids or shoes to hold the blade off the surface, and where possible we wait for the ground to freeze before the first clearing of the season. A contractor who does not ask whether your driveway is gravel is going to move your stone onto your lawn.
Steep drives change both traction and stacking direction, since pushing snow uphill is slow and pushing it downhill can bury the street end. We plan the direction of travel at the site walk and we usually recommend adding salt or ice melt, because a steep driveway that refreezes overnight is genuinely dangerous to walk on.
This is a real problem on older city lots by midwinter. We plan stacking from the first storm to preserve usable width as long as possible, and if the property runs out of room we can relocate the pile within the property or haul it away rather than letting the driveway shrink to one lane.
Walkways, steps and entries can be added and most customers include them. A plow blade cannot clear a set of front steps, so those are done by hand and treated. A cleared driveway that ends at an icy walkway has not solved much.
Yes, subject to availability. Contracted customers are serviced first during and after a major event, so one-time requests placed during a large storm may wait until the contracted routes are complete. If you want reliable timing, a seasonal agreement is the way to get it.
