The more common problem is not collapse, it is water. When heat escapes into the attic it melts the snow sitting on the warm part of the roof. That meltwater runs down to the cold overhang, refreezes at the edge, and builds a ridge of ice. The next round of meltwater backs up behind that ridge and sits there. Water standing on a shingle roof does what water does, it finds the seams and goes under, then into the sheathing, then down the wall cavity, and eventually shows up as a brown stain on a bedroom ceiling in February.

By the time you see the stain, the insulation is already wet and the repair is no longer a roof job. Clearing the snow before the dam forms is dramatically cheaper than fixing what the dam causes.

We leave a protective layer

We pull the bulk of the load and deliberately leave a thin layer of snow on the shingles. Scraping down to bare shingle in freezing conditions is how granules come off and how roofs get shortened by five years.

Steam for existing ice dams

Ice that has already formed is removed with low-pressure steam, which melts a channel through the dam and lets the trapped water drain. We do not chip, hammer or use picks on ice sitting on shingles.

Gutters, downspouts and valleys get opened so the next thaw actually drains instead of pooling and refreezing in the same place.

Commercial and low slope roofs

Flat and low slope commercial roofs are a different problem. They do not shed, they collect, and wind pushes snow into drifts against parapet walls and rooftop units where the load concentrates. Drift loading is what actually causes most winter roof failures, not uniform snow depth.

Why not just do it yourself

Every winter, emergency rooms across the Northeast see falls from ladders set on frozen ground, and roofs get damaged by homeowners chipping at ice with hatchets and metal shovels. A roof rake from the ground on a single-story ranch is a reasonable DIY job. A two-story colonial, a steep pitch, a slate or metal roof, or an ice dam that has already formed is not.
